In the spring of 1999, the director of the WKU Cave and Karst Research Center, a visionary board member, Dr. Nicholas Crawford, persuaded the committee to build a dam in the cave to provide internal floatation. The threat of commercial development on the land near the caves and valleys forced friend organizations to begin to seek protection for the land. Today, the income from gift shops and event rentals continues to sustain Lost River Cave as a cultural and natural landmark.
