At Athenaeum Theatre, they are both cultural resources and a forum for groups and audiences of new and old artists in the Lakeview community and the Greater Chicago area. Athenaeum Theatre's purpose is not only to allow performers to participate in the creative process as art collaborators, but also to create a highly friendly working environment where performers are supported emotionally and artistically. By exclusively creating the work of living composers, they are dedicated to showing the potential of art forms through the different sounds of their time. Opened in 1911, the theater is part of the large campus of the Diocese of Saint Alfonsos and has a long history dedicated to serving the art world.
