Sturgeon River was founded in 1980 by Karen and Steve Andrews in Wolverine Township, Michigan, about 25 miles east of Petoskey. Karen and Steve started to build their first studio on the banks of the River, but soon after, Karen and Steve opened the first pottery shop on Wolverine Street. The building was originally a gas station used as a studio, gallery and workshop. Dana Andrews Karen Andrews Soon after, the pottery was moved to the Gulf Coast of Michigan, about 5 miles west of Petoskey. There, in addition to Andrews' pottery, Sturgeon River also added some products including locally made candles and gifts. As local and regional attention to pottery continues to grow, the store has grown and expanded again.
