In the late 19th century, local businessman and athlete John Earls decided to set up a new sports club Toronto Marlies in downtown Toronto. Mr. Earls will go down in history as the "father" of Marlboro hockey. At the time, he never thought that his new club would become a legendary franchise. Although the club continued to operate junior, intermediate and senior teams in the early 20th century, it was not until 1927 that the name of Marlboro really emerged. In the 1929 season, it won their first commemorative cup. Before the dismissal of third-year students in the 1988-1989 season, Toronto Marlies could have won seven commemorative cups but sent more than 250 players and coaches to the national team.
